“Why Yoga has become so popular in America? Why India is still not there?”

All of us know that Yoga originated in India and the history of yoga can be traced back to Indus Valley civilization. Maharshi Patanjali is regarded as the founder of yoga and “Yoga Sutras” written by him are considered by many as the foundational text of Yoga. The Sanskrit word yoga has many meanings and is derived from the Sanskrit root “yuj,” meaning “to control,” “to yoke” or “to unite. The word is basically associated with spiritual and meditative practices in Hinduism, Jainism and Buddhism. In the late 1800s, Ramakrishna Paramahamsa, a Bhakti Yogi, brought about a rebirth of yoga in India. The noted Indian author Sri Aurobindo translated and interpreted Yogic scriptures, such as the Upanishads and Bhagavad-Gita. Swami Vivekananda, Ramakrishna’s disciple, is well known for introducing Yoga philosophy to many in the west. In the last few decades, yogis like BKS Iyenger, T.K.V. Desikachar and Parmahansa Yogananda have spread greater awareness of hath yoga to the west. Indra Devi, a Russian by birth, was yoga’s most prominent female force who spread yoga throughout the west.

Do you know that according to Yoga journal, there are 18 million yoga practioners in North America? Yoga has already become a gigantic industry in America if you include yoga studios, yoga retreats, and products like mats, clothing, shoes, and games like Wii fits, conferences, books and videos! Besides, media’s fascination with the fact that celebrities like Madonna and Sting are yoga practitioners glamorizes the image of yoga and leads to more Americans joining this bandwagon. So what is it about it about this 5000-year-old practice, originated in India, to resonate with Americans? All of us know that it can’t be that Americans are running out of options in the market of “keeping fit” as there are just plethora of exercise equipment, gyms, books, videos and exercise programs out there.

It is no secret that Americans always had fascination for anything mystique, eastern or oriental with a spiritual flavor. On top of that they have an insatiable need to try anything which can keep them fit. The martial art studios, teaching arts like kung-fu, taekwondo, karate and judo did address both aspects to some extent, but remained confined to teenagers or people who were relatively younger. Somehow, most people could not integrate martial arts as a part of their life style as strenuous routines were hard for people as they got older. Whereas, Yoga’s adoption by all age groups grew in leaps and bounds and you couldn’t surpass a busy street without seeing anyone carrying a yoga mat. There are various flavors of yoga which is common in America like Vinyasa, Iyenger, Kundalini,Kriya, Bikram, power, mild, hath and many others – each is designed to meet you where you are and based on your needs. Yoga practitioners in America actually believe that they can find a yoga pose for every ailment in your body! Finally, Yoga is turning out to be much more than various “stretching” routines and is making them understand difference between “health” and “fitness”.

Perhaps the best way to understand yoga’s popularity in America is to go right to the people who practice it. If you ask them why the practice, some of the more common replies you might hear are flexibility, increased energy, improved focus, reduction of the symptoms associated with stress and an overall good feeling. The fact is that yoga can have a rejuvenating effect on all systems of the body including the circulatory, glandular system, digestive, nervous, musculoskeletal, and reproductive and respiratory systems.

According to the U.S. Department on Aging, there are four components to good physical health: strength, flexibility, balance and aerobic capacity. It is interesting to note that yoga can help you accomplish all these things, and no fancy piece of equipment is needed other than your own body and a yoga mat.

Yoga brands and accessories are becoming a giant business model. Yogis are using the “Starbucks” business model to expand the traditionalist practice into a highly-demanded commodity. Yoga is here to stay and it is becoming a lifestyle statement for Americans. It has survived the hype and skepticism. Today, even doctors in US are recommending yoga to their patients.
Let’s talk about Indian now! What is the state of Yoga in India? According to Sri Sri Ravi Shankar, a world-renowned spiritual leader, “If an individual can be credited with reviving yoga in India, it is solely Swami Ramdev. Unperturbed by issues and controversies generated, he has done a phenomenal job in re-introducing Yoga at a national level. But Indians still have a long way to go as far as adaption of yoga at grassroots level is concerned. The percentage of population practicing it daily is very low if you compare it with America. Yoga is free and practice of yoga doesn’t require any investment other than time. Every Indian needs a wakeup call to rethink about their health and should try to practice yoga. There is just no excuse to not practice this ancient tradition when the rest of the world is embracing it in their life style. Indians should be leading rest of the world again as far as yoga is concerned because it has always been a part of India’s tradition.

The supporters of India re-defined movement have to understand that re-defining India doesn’t just mean to address social issues like environment, poverty, unemployment etc.. It also means to go back to our ancient history and great culture and learn great practices like yoga. They have to encourage yoga practice at a grassroots level! Yoga will help them to maintain a perfect balance between mind, body and soul! A healthy India will have a better foundation to re-define India for all other social issues.

TEAM INDIA Redefined
http://www.indiaredefined.org

Please read this Idea worth Spreading which has inspired Many Citizens to put their ISR-

Individual Social Responsibility on this platform of INDIA Redefined:

Everywhere we all talk of problems in India – but do little.

Part of the reason is that we think that solving these are the government,
Politicians, bureaucracy, economists or NGO’s, Corporate or Social Worker’s responsibility – not ours.

But shy away from even talking about our responsibilities as a citizen of the country.
Many of us do not Even bother to vote and then criticize the people who are elected on vote Bank politics.

This INERTIA is the root cause of many of our problems and we are partly to Be blamed.

We have left governance to people, who are not really our representative, Policy to people who do not feel they are accountable to us, we have left environment, slum, and literacy to NGOs, Social Workers who struggle without our support.

– The list can go on and on…

So came the idea of INDIA REDEFINED
– A movement to create responsible and empowered citizens by bringing About “Behavioral Change”.

It is only when we do our duties we shall be empowered to demand our Rights.

It is by this change in behavior that we can unlock people’s potential to be Empowered citizens.

This will redefine how we think and act as an Indian.

…..and that is what INDIA Redefined is about.

So, what is the Vision of INDIA Redefined? It is simply –

CREATING A HAPPY INDIA

And how can we create a Happy India?

Most of the ordinary people want to do something for the Country, they just don’t know how.
The idea is to mobilize these masses and bring them together.

How does INDIA Redefined do it?

By giving a structure to this… ‘Desire to do something’.

By creating an opportunity for them, to achieve small successes in doing Something for the society

… Something within his resources and available time

– Be it planting trees or cutting down the electricity consumption – a simple
Successful activity, that would not only be beneficial at a larger scale but

Also provide the motivation to strive for bigger changes.

Developing this behavioral change across Indians of all strata, INDIA
Redefined plans to tackle problems, leveraging the power of individual.

It is a citizen’s empowerment movement – a platform for ordinary citizens
By ordinary citizens – each fulfilling his own ISR – Individual Social Responsibility.

What makes this movement unique or even different?

Well, there are many wonderful organizations, NGO, Charities, and People which do a Lot of wonderful work –
But it never seems to be enough.

Most of them work within a context or for a specific cause, that the overall Positive effect … … Is lost in the gaps.

One of the biggest reasons is that we have not tapped efficiently into the Potential of the individual.

INDIA Redefined is a platform for people from different Diversity, backgrounds, different social class, having different outlooks and Opinions to come together and work towards redefining India.
That is why INDIA Redefine’s vision is created by an amalgamation of

Different visions that ultimately leads to a HAPPY INDIA.
It is important to understand that we are not affiliated with a single political Party or motive.

But do not hesitate to work with any and every political party, business Houses or NGO for the right cause
By bringing drops of people together on a common platform INDIA
Redefined creates an ocean –
Ocean strong enough to make government, politicians, public servants not only accountable but also make each Indian an Awakened Citizen…
People appreciated the movement from all over World and there are many supporters from All Strata of life, from all over India, NRIs, from other Countries, People of different Nationalities too.

This shows that there are people out there who want to ‘do

Something’…Make a difference.
All they need is the platform.

The idea has not only got support of people but also some recognition

– It was adjudged “The Best Humanitarian Initiative” in December 2009

In this long journey of redefining India, we have taken only a few baby steps
But then again, a journey of thousand miles begins with a single step…

This idea…. Idea of a movement that is trying to tackle most, if not all, social Issues and help citizens become empowered by the means of behavioral
Change, asks you for only one thing

– DONATION.

Not of MONEY.

But Donate Your TIME.

Do we want to make India better?
Are we Fed up of table talks with no action?
Are we willing to do our bit for the country?
Are we Confused how to do this?

Lets be together to Redefined India.

“Educate India”

Educate India” Many youth, studying in colleges wanted to implement this. Students who are willing to be
part of this movement will be taking the oath- “I donate” 6 months of my life in training or education, for
those who are underprivileged. Students are trying to find some School or College of their interest or same
subjects, which are either Municipal Schools or Govt schools or where there is lack of good teachers
within 40 KM area in radius, where they can reach. They are trying to find the details of how many students
are studying there and how many teachers are there. The facts about that place and find a way to get
appointment as a teacher or faculty there. If thousands of Students take this oath and 50 of them also keep
this promise- and among them there are Engineering College students, IIT , IIM Students, Medical College
Students, Students of NMIMS, St Stephens, Xavier’s, Presidency, Loyola, LSR, Symbiosis, Hindu
college students, Delhi School of Management or FMS, JNU, or any Good University Students then with
those Students as a faculty- their Knowledge, English, and many other things will go. Students who
participate in Educate India will get Identity cards. INDIA Redefined needs Students Coordinators of Educate
India in different Universities.

In India, education is supposed to be the great equalizer and the primary vehicle for upward mobility. But,
the reality today is that all too often, where children are born determines their educational prospects. Across
the country, largest number of children living in poverty have academic and, therefore, life prospects that are
dramatically different than those of their peers in wealthier communities Mission is to build the movement to
eliminate educational inequity (in terms of quality of education) by enlisting our nation’s most promising
future leaders in the effort. “I donate” will help in recruiting outstanding college graduates from all
backgrounds and career interests to commit to teach for 6 months in urban and rural schools for
underprivileged during or immediately after their student life. Ranjana Kanti got inspired by Wendy Kopp,
founder of Teach for America. In India, education is supposed to be the great equalizer and the primary
vehicle for upward mobility. But, the reality today is that all too often, where children are born determines
their educational prospects.

“I Care”

“I Care”, Project is given on front page of website. “I Care”, initially had 8 activities but we have to keep adding simplest of activities every 3 months.
For that we will keep making “I Care Coordinator in every City, University and Villages.” We will give open
file of this PPT of “I Care “to “I Care Youth Coordinator in every City, University and Villages.” once his her
Identity Card is sent. “I Care Youth Coordinator “have to only edit and make some other 8 activities.
Success breeds motivation, to further work. INDIA Redefined will always be using this mantra in ’I CARE’
project within the movement “INDIA Redefined”,– The point is to get people motivated by executing
simple activities SUCUSSEFULLY. The key aspects in designing the activities are SIMPLICITY and HIGH
SUCCESS RATIO.

Here INDIA Redefined mentions – Concept of Personal Energy. It is not enough to use one’s economic
freedom only. It is nice and generous for people to donate money, but that alone cannot be satisfying.
There needs to be a sense of involvement. It does not mean that you need to spearhead every initiative, but
do not make monetary contribution as an offset to the lack of participation. The message is to “Become
Involved”. So the purpose of “I CARE” project is to get people involved. Once that is achieved they will be
ready to take up bigger challenges and issues which face us all. Remember INDIA Redefined has to make more Doers than Beneficiarie

C.U.R.E India

C.U.R.E India – Citizen United For Redefining & Empowering India
“Ek Ka Dus” is the first Initiative of C.U.R.E. – Make a difference in the lives of
ten underprivileged Indians and let them become your follower. If you are willing to mentor ten semi

to become INDIA Redefine’s
They have there thoughts, ideologies & a zeal to make India the best place in the world to live.
We all want not only to change India but Indians.
Empowering every individual is our core thought….
We think small, we think possible, we think practical
This is the secret of India redefined & Ranjana kanti`s success.
Think INDIA Redefined as a great tree
C.U.R.E. India as branch
Ek ka dus as a leaf
As said earlier it is about empowering every Indian.
Unfortunately India has illiteracy, poverty, malnutrition ,disease all across us.
We have to just look around you will find them as part of your life….
e.g.: Ask you kam wali bai is her daughter going to school..she is quite …she ignores the question….you give
the answer
Ask the guy whom your garage wala employs what he likes….he tells you he likes to sing… use to play flute
in his village.
he now washes your car, repairs your punctured tube , looks shabby & works 18 hours a day…. liberate
him…
When you walk down to thrown the stale stinking fish down the lane left hand corner dust bin which has
rotted ,due to power cut ,you see the five year old girl picking food for herself. ever asked who is she…Your
daughter asks you ” dad why is eating from dustbin”…you ignore her question…no beta she is poor…she has
nobody….lets have ice cream… your daughter tells you….Can we buy her one….Buy That girl a ice
cream & more, buy her dreams…liberate her
This is C.U.R.E India, this is EK KA DUS….
Find such incidence, find such people, find such opportunities , they are hundreds…you have to adopt just
ten…Don’t make it difficult…we all understand it…make it simple…EMPOWER…Education, health ,
knowledge love which we all can give to somebody who don`t have it….
LETS C.U.R.E India
If one guy does 10 good work which uplifts 10 people he is connected ,He or she uplifts the society,
he Redefines India.

“Develop your own Village”
Hamaare Haathon Badalte Gaon (Our Hands for changing our Villages)
“Develop your own Village” was initially thought for Global Indians Group (GIG) & NRIs, but many Indians living in Urban areas have shown interest in this so they can also take this up. Majority of India lives in villages. Lack of opportunities is forcing people to migrate to urban areas. Unless we create opportunities for people in the villages, give them a reason to remain in villages and promote entrepreneurship and agricultural at village level, redefining of India will remain an urban phenomenon. We have to look at our own villages – develop these, educate the people there, create awareness and opportunities for the people of our own villages. If we make our roots strong – we shall make the country strong. We are working on creating a set of activities and small projects which anyone can take back to his village and with active involvement of the villagers there, can bring about positive changes, helping Redefine India.
Do You Want To Do Something for the Development of Your Village
You can help your village to develop through INDIA Redefined platform. Your initiative can benefit any or many of the following
To your childhood classmates, relatives and community
To your birth/childhood place
To the fond memories of your parents
To the fond memories of your grand parents
To your children
To your great grand children
To your native place
To provide sustainable livelihood to the fellow villagers
To safe guard flora and fauna
Help People switch to organic farming for sustainable livelihood.
For young generations to see the greenery.
To your country
To Mother Earth

Broad Guidelines for “Develop a Village” Campaign of INDIA Redefined
· Create a group of people who will be interested to work on the campaign.

· Identify a village in India, preferably a village where people from your group are familiar with the village (or the general locality) and some of you know the people of that village well.

· Identify few key people in the village including some local youth who will be the part of your team

· Identify the main problems or issues facing the village. Make a list.

· Now, prioritize the issues with regards to which needs to be tackled on the most urgent basis.

· First pick up one of the top issues from the priority list. Choose a problem/ issue which can have large impact on limited resources. Important to remember is to find solutions or projects which can be sustained in the long run – for example, if in a village there is water problem the ask questions like

ü Is putting a number of hand-pumps sufficient?

ü What is the condition of groundwater table? How long can it last?

ü What will happen if a hand pump starts malfunctioning after a couple of years?

ü Should we train locals with the pump repair? How will the spares be procured then?

ü Is it better to take up rain water harvesting than providing hand pumps?

ü How do we take up rain water harvesting and can we find someone locally who can guide the villagers on rain water harvesting?

· Keep expectations realistic instead of working on over ambitious projects. Time will come to take up bigger projects when smaller ones are done successfully.

· Do not start on multiple issues initially. We should aim at taking up one issue initially and try addressing that issue successfully. Success in addressing one issue builds confidence and trust not only among the team but also in the villagers also and they start participating in the development more actively. A village, or any place, cannot be developed and sustained, unless people who are living there are not actively involved. Do not treat them as beneficiaries but as stakeholders. Win their confidence and trust by establishing your sincerity and maintain that.

· Try to involve experts (search within your contacts and network) in the field for advice and guidance

· Plan the project first with various milestones. Contributing only with money will not develop a village. Think of innovative ways, leveraging technology to get personally involved to work out ways to push forward your project even when remotely located. Create a framework of responsibility and accountability among the team members.

· Leverage INDIA Redefined’s network of people who may be able to help on the project, so share your project details at different stages of planning and execution.

· See the Annexure I for an indicative list of issues and problems faced in many villages. Please do a ground level reality check in your identified village in deciding what that village’s priority is, which may not be in this list.

· Read about examples of village development done without government or NGO help and take a leaf out to use that in a customized way for developing the village you have chosen. See Annexure II to read the excerpts on how Ralegan Siddhi was developed by Anna Hazare. ANNEXURE II
Excerpts from Anna Hazare talk on development of his Village Ralegan Siddhi
There is a village called Ralegan Siddhi with a population of 2000 people. Earlier, in this village, there used to be no drinking water in summers. 80 per cent people did not have food to eat. People were forced to travel 5-6 kms outside village due to lack of work in the village. There was neither adequate work nor adequate food for all. This forced many villagers to make liquor. There were as many as 30-35 liquor manufacturing units. Liquor was made and sold from village to village for livelihood. Due to alcohol, there were regular fights in the village. There were no proper educational facilities in the village. 4 classes were held in 2 rooms. There were no medical facilities, neither for villagers nor for animals. People used to practice untouchability.

Girls were married off at the age of 12-13 years. The circumstances forced them to do this. Efforts for developing this village started in 1975. Swami Vivekanand used to say that people with empty stomachs can’t absorb knowledge. First we should think how to procure food for empty stomachs and work for everyone. And we did that. We tried to conserve every drop of rain water in the village. We increased the green cover by growing grass and planted more than 3 lakh trees. Nala bund, Check Dam, cement dam, CCT, Percolation Tank and other corrective measures were taken and rain water was conserved in the village. This being a drought affected area, the annual rainfall is just between 400-500 mm. Earlier, the village had less than 300 acres of cultivable land, which yielded one crop annually. Due to water conservation, cultivable land has increased to 1500 acres, which now yields 2 crops annually. After 35 years, it is the same village, same people and same land- but without taking any money from any industrialist, this village has become self sufficient. The village in which 80 per cent people once slept hungry, this village now exports vegetables. People once used to go out for work. Now its hard to get even 10 people for labour as people tend their own farms. Since they have got work and food in their village, the number of people migrating to cities has reduced. No family in the village procures grains from outside. Earlier the village did not produce even 300 litres of surplus milk, which could be sold outside. Today, 4000-5000 litres of surplus milk is sold outside the village on a daily basis. Every day the village earns around 80 to 90 thousand rupees by selling milk. The village which once used to sleep hungry, is now selling vegetables to cities. Every year 150-200 trucks of onions are sent to Chennai and Bangalore. The village, where the school was only till class 4 is now imparting education upto class XII in both Art and Science. Earlier the girls did not have access to education. Today, they are completing graduation.

Earlier, dalits were not allowed to enter temples. They were forced to draw water from a separate well. They were made to sit separately during wedding feasts. Today, when the dalits were unable to pay back their loans amounting to Rs. 60,000, the gram sabha decided that other non-dalits would pay off their loan. All villagers did two years of ’shramdaan’ on the land belonging to dalits. Crops were grown and the loan was paid off by the villagers. Now-a-days, in any community feast in the village, dalits are also involved with people of other castes and religions in cooking and distributing food. Untouchability is no longer practiced. Buildings like school, temples, community temples worth crores were built by people through their hardwork and ‘shramdaan’. In the last 7 years, the village has been visited by nearly 5.5 lakh people from India and abroad. 5 villages neighboring Ralegan Siddhi are also developing on same lines. Similar development work is now taking place in many villages of Maharashtra. 50 new villages are being chosen for similar work.

Visionary of this Movement Anurag Kanti, thought about this kind of Movement where people can give ISR- Individual Social Responsibilities 20 years back-but since all these years he could not know any other common person, so closely as Ranjana Kanti, whom he had seen everyday changing lives of few people and tried to make that person more than Beneficiaries another Doer, without any platform, without any support, without any donation, without forming any NGO, without any extra resources, intelligence , without using any Rotary or Lioness. or without any special qualities, without calling herself a social worker within her resources and available time .There is a long list of activities of Ranjana Kanti, here are few:

From free tuition to children of illiterate parents, awareness program. In slums, working for visually handicapped, teaching children of migrant Workers, street children, helping riot affected people are some of the Activities I have been involved in. Represented economically weak Parents In school for fee concession, Organized Programs of communal harmony, Free computer literacy for senior citizens in my institute, helped set up Training and later business for economically deprived housewives in Stitching, helped them in setting up many small scale business of spices, Embroidery etc, Awareness programs in slums for vaccination, cleaning, Hygiene, initiated vermin culture projects, garbage segregation, Conducted campaigns for environment conservation, coordinated with NMMC for relocation of street hawkers, organized various programs in Municipal schools, street plays on population, anti plastic, corruption etc. For last 4 years I have been training economically weak youths in Graphics & animation through E-edutainment Unlimited & home. On an Average, every quarter 5-10 such youths are trained for free, and then Placed into jobs.
All these activities were done by Ranjana without forming any NGO, without any funding, but for some of above initiatives many people volunteered themselves.
Anurag Kanti shared this idea of starting a movement for common people, by common people, and of common people.with Many Intellectuals and Entrepreneurs who are associated with many leading organizations and who kept adding to the vision of INDIA Redefined, for which INDIA Redefined is greatly indebted .
Everyone thought of making some common person face INDIA Redefined.
People from all strata from different backgrounds, different religion, from different social class, having different outlooks and opinions, even from different countries have supported this idea of redefining India.
All these intellectuals were convinced that Ranjana Kanti who already has above qualities can become a Force Multiplier for common people.
And finally in 2009, in spite of Ranjana saying no for this proposal initially, they all convinced her to become Face of INDIA Redefined.
Please help in Spreading about this Movement across India /Globe. Small media newspapers or channels http://www.indiaredefined.org/in_media.html may be writing about Ranjana or taking her interview but any of you must have done more than what she has done.
INDIA Redefined or Ranjana Kanti still does not have any office or employees or funds, and only resource. All mails or messages about INDIA Redefined from Ranjana Kanti facebook accounts, mails, Ranjana Kanti Linkedin messages are sent by many other supporters of INDIA Redefined Movement.
So let’s make this Movement INDIA Redefined Way of life for future generations who arrive on this Planet Earth.

How to keep this Unity of Citizens created by Anti Corruption Movement

Anti Corruption Movement has United the Citizens &this unity has to remain to become like a pressure group forever.Too few leaders, like Anna, have first built their credibility by doing their duties. And even the followers of such leaders have yet to do their duty towards country, society and community at large. Hence the moral authority of such movements does not last long and is dependent on the leader’s karma.First fulfil your duties and responsibilities, then you automatically have the moral authority to demand your rights and once it is done on a unified platform like INDIA Redefined http://www.indiaredefined.org, nobody will be able to ignore your rights.

Don’t leave governance to the people who are not our representatives, don’t leave Policy to the people who do not feel they are accountable to us, and don’t leave all the other problems like literacy, slums, environment etc to NGOs and social workers who struggle without Citizen’s support.Citizens only come together if they r against something.

All over world the Govt. sector, Corporate Sector, NGO Sector are working but INDIA Redefined http://www.indiaredefined.org is bringing the fourth sector i.e. Common people – Citizens working for country on one platform . That too in masses!

Common people till now have only come together if they are against something ; e.g All Independence movements, Movements against corruption, they have never come on one platform to work positively for country and then empowering themselves.

INDIA Redefined Pledge

I, a common citizen of INDIA, take the pledge to Carry out my responsibilities toward the country and the society and stand for my rights.

As a member of INDIA Redefined movement I shall work within my available resources and time to awaken other citizens of India and create an Educated, Healthy, Green and Sustainable country to have a Prosperous and Happy India for ourselves and the future generations.

INDIA Redefined’s One year journey

November 30, 2010 2 comments

Hope this Initiative of INDIA Redefined gives hope and motivation all those who wish to Make INDIA a happy country.

In this one year time since this movement INDIA Redefined was started, thousands of Indians are everyday putting their ISR Individual Social Responsibility on this platform of INDIA Redefined .They got motivated by only one line.

“Don’t leave governance to the people who are not our representatives, don’t leave Policy to the people who do not feel they are accountable to us, and don’t leave all the other problems like literacy, slums, environment etc to NGOs and social workers who struggle without Citizen’s support”

Supporters of IR are working hard to make INDIA Redefined a strong platform to
ensure better governance, better politicians, better bureaucracy, better infrastructure, killing of corruption, and a better India for ourselves & our future generation.
They all have a hope that tomorrow INDIA Redefined can
act as a pressure group, as needed, will align with right causes and people to achieve the goal of making INDIA a Happy Country.

INDIA Redefined ,www.indiaredefined-a4c.org the non political a citizen’s empowerment movement, is actually creating responsible, empowered citizens by bringing about “Behavioral Change”.

Students have supported India Redefined’s Youth campaign for Green, Clean,
Peaceful , United India .

NRIs want to come forward to take up “Develop your own Village” Project.

Thousands of ordinary Indian Citizen’s participated in “I Care” Project.

Youth, studying in colleges are helping to implement “EDUCATE INDIA”. Students who are willing to be part of this movement, take the oath – “I donate” 6 months of my life in training or education, for those who are underprivileged.
In India, education is supposed to be the great equalizer and the primary vehicle for upward mobility. But, the reality today is that all too often, where children are born determines their educational prospects. Across the country, largest number of children living in poverty have academic and, therefore, life prospects that are dramatically different than those of their peers in wealthier communities. Mission is to build the movement to eliminate educational inequity (in terms of quality of education) by enlisting our nation’s most promising future leaders in the effort.
“I donate” will help in recruiting outstanding college graduates from all backgrounds and career interests to commit to teach for 6 months in urban and rural schools for underprivileged during or immediately after their student life.

We have left governance to people who are not really our representative, policy to people who do not feel they are accountable to us, and we have left all the other problems like slums, environment etc to NGOs who struggle without Citizen's support – the list can go on and on…

We all talk of various problems in India at home, on facebook walls ,in our drawing rooms, offices, linkedin, etc.– but do little. Part of the reason is that we think that solving these are responsibility of the government, politicians, bureaucracy, economists or NGO’s – Anyone but us.

We are very fond of talking of our RIGHTS but shy away from even talking about our responsibilities as a citizen of the country. Many of us do not even bother to vote and then criticize the people who are elected on vote bank politics. This INERTIA is the root cause of many of our problems and we are partly to be blamed.

So came the idea of INDIA REDEFINED ( http://www.indiaredefined-a4c.org) – A movement to create responsible and empowered citizens by bringing about “Behavioral Change”.

It is simply – CREATING A HAPPY INDIA. And how can we create a Happy India?

Most of the ordinary people want to do something for the country, they just don't know how. The idea is to mobilize these masses and bring them together. How does INDIA Redefined do it? By giving a structure to this 'Desire to do Something'. By creating an opportunity for them, to achieve small successes in doing something for the society… Something within his resources and available time – a simple successful activity, that would not only be beneficial at a larger scale but also provide the motivation to strive for bigger changes.

Developing this behavioral change across Indians of all strata, INDIA Redefined plans to tackle problems, leveraging the power of individual. It is a citizen’s empowerment movement – a platform for ordinary citizens by ordinary citizens – each fulfilling his own ISR – Individual Social Responsibility.

What makes this movement unique or even different? Well, there are many wonderful organizations, NGO, Charities which do a lot of wonderful work – But it never seems to be enough. Most of them work within a context or for a specific cause, that the overall positive effect ….. is lost in the gaps. One of the biggest reasons is that we have not tapped efficiently into the potential of the individual. INDIA Redefined is a platform for people from different, different social class, having different outlooks and opinions to come together and work towards redefining India.

That is why INDIA Redefined’s vision is created by an amalgamation of different visions that ultimately leads to a HAPPY INDIA. It is important to understand that we are not affiliated with a single political party or motive. But do not hesitate to work with any and every political party, business houses or NGO for the right cause. By bringing drops of people together on a common platform INDIA Redefined creates an ocean – Ocean strong enough to make government, politicians, public servants not only accountable but also make each Indian an Awakened Citizen…

So where is INDIA Redefined today? In one year time the membership has already reached more than a lakh. This shows that there are people out there who want to 'do something'…Make a difference. All they need is the platform. The idea has not only got support of people but also some– it was adjudged “The Best Humanitarian Initiative” in December 2009 In this long journey of redefining India, we have taken only a few baby steps But then again, a journey of thousand miles begins with a single step…

This idea…. Idea of a movement that is trying to tackle most, if not all, social issues and help citizens become empowered by the means of behavioral change, asks you for only one thing – DONATION. Not of MONEY. But of TIME. JOIN India Redefined.

On… Like minded people…… and comfort zones – An important thought by Ranjana Kanti

May 18, 2010 7 comments

I was provoked into thinking about the subject in terms of comparisons of achievements. Some of the members of India Redefined,a Citizen’s Empowerment movement which I started last year pointed out to me that some of the appointed coordinators do not have the background to justify, in comparison to my own history of accomplishments in social service.
Firstly, some or all of us, have at some stage of our lives felt content by our own achievements (even if it was a temporary feeling) and for even smaller reasons. Our egos permit us, that sense of achievement and even give us the benefit of comparing this with lesser mortals who have not put in adequate efforts. I pose this question, as to whom do you think is in a better position to contribute – the person who has achieved something and is “content”, or the person who has not tried at all?
In my opinion, for the good of the nation and India Redefined, in particular, the latter brackets of people are more suitable candidates for induction, contribution and growth. A person who does not have the feeling of achievement, at least looks forward to an opportunity to accomplish something. A person who has “been there, done that” has a sense of contentment, which gives him the feeling of a comfort zone, which does not motivate a real solution finder.
Another class of associations that we have been building up life long has been with “Like Minded People”. We always warm up to like minded people, be it in our professional lives, personal lives, seeking friendships, in religion, caste, color, state….you name it. We find our own comfort zones to remain content. Like minded people form and participate in political parties – be it Congress or BJP or Samajwadi. Like minded people follow a particular religion – Hinduism, Islam, Sikhism, Christianity or any other. Like minded people get together to start an enterprise or business or an NGO. While it is good and even important for like minded people to come together in pursuit of an objective – we often stop respecting the other like minded people and their objectives, and sometimes even oppose the views of the others just because they belong to other group of “Like Minded People”. Don’t we often see that one political party opposing all that is being espoused by the other political party, irrespective of the validity or correctness of the issue or action? This is a typical example of “Like-minded thinking” of one group dividing people rather than uniting people. History is replete with examples in our nation formation, from Raja’s choosing like minded people as their minions, to state’s being formed on this principle….and now also being further subdivided, seeking the same lines of justification!
It is time for us to think about the whole nation as a set of different-minded people, who want to do something positive to build this nation, with unity. We need to seek and build on this principle of unity in diversity. No longer can we think in terms of religion, caste, creed as divisive factors. Just because we speak same language and have similar food, does not mean people speaking a different language or having a different cuisine need to be opposed, made fun of or not respected. “Unity in Diversity” is what India is and what we should be accepting to make India a great nation to be proud of. We need to search for a commonality, goodness and unifying activities that can get us on a common platform of nation building. Let us get out of that comfort zone of being with like minded people and think of ways that can unite all of us with a common goal and agenda. The unity of our participants, should be a mind-changing and behavioral change, which can achieve a common goal.
I was a person who did something for the country and felt content about it, thinking that I had done my bit. I have seen the change in perception, after getting out of my comfort zone, in starting this movement which will take us to a newer horizon, with the combined efforts of all. Let it not be a dream shared by a few, but an effort, determined by all India Redefined participants, in driving our destiny, as a nation. Let us get out of our comfort zones………..and find not just like-minded people, but interact with all towards our brighter future with anyone irrespective of any ideology, philosophy, political, regional or religious affiliations. India Redefined asks to fulfill ISR-Individual Social Responsibility.
